For decades, ranch has been an American staple. But in 2026, one of the world’s most familiar dressings found itself at the centre of an unexpected international food moment.
During the FIFA World Cup across the United States, international visitors began discovering ranch and sharing their reactions online. A Swedish fan’s enthusiastic declaration that “Europe needs ranch ASAP” went viral, while other visitors started talking about taking bottles home. The craze became big enough that the US Transportation Security Administration joined the conversation, reminding travellers that full-size bottles of ranch needed to go in checked luggage.
It was a light-hearted World Cup story, but it also highlighted something much bigger happening in food: ranch is experiencing a resurgence.
From American staple to global flavour trend
Ranch certainly isn’t new. Created in the US in the 1950s, it eventually overtook Italian dressing to become America’s best-selling salad dressing. But its latest chapter looks different. Ranch has moved well beyond its traditional role as a salad dressing and into the broader world of sauces, dips and menu innovation.
The numbers support the shift. According to food and beverage intelligence company Datassential, 75% of US consumers like or love ranch, 44% consume it weekly and 28% say they’ve increased their consumption over the past year. Significantly, ranch is also the only dressing increasing its restaurant menu penetration year on year.
And increasingly, it’s the versatility of ranch that matters.
It can bring cooling contrast to buffalo wings and hot chicken, add richness to burgers and sandwiches, accompany fried seafood or vegetables, finish a salad or grain bowl, or simply become the dip at the centre of a share plate. Its creamy, savoury and herbaceous profile also makes it an ideal partner for another major menu movement: heat.
Spicy ranch, buffalo ranch and other flavour variations are helping turn a familiar dressing into something chefs can adapt across multiple menu occasions. Datassential reports that 38% of US consumers already like or love spicy ranch, while its broader research shows growing consumer interest in distinctive and signature sauces.
Australia is taking notice
The World Cup may have accelerated ranch’s international profile, but the trend had already started travelling.
In Australia, Food & Drink Business reported in 2025 on local products being launched specifically to capitalise on the “viral US flavour trend” for ranch, including both classic creamy ranch and buffalo ranch varieties. The publication also noted the extraordinary amount of social content being generated around the flavour.
Major foodservice brands are responding too. McDonald’s Australia introduced a new Ranch Sauce alongside the permanent launch of Chicken McWings in June 2025, pairing the cool, creamy profile with one of the categories where ranch has long excelled in the US: fried chicken.
For Australian foodservice operators, the opportunity is therefore less about simply importing an American trend and more about recognising where local menus are heading.
Why ranch works on the modern menu
Some food trends arrive with a very narrow application. Ranch is different.
Its strength is its familiarity and adaptability. It works across casual dining, pubs, cafés, QSR and contemporary restaurant menus, and can move easily between dressing, dip, drizzle and sauce.
It also sits neatly alongside several of the flavours and formats currently dominating menus: fried chicken, burgers, loaded fries, share plates, hot honey, buffalo sauce and chilli-led dishes. When menus are becoming hotter and bolder, a cool, creamy dressing provides balance.
That versatility is particularly valuable in a commercial kitchen. One sauce can work across multiple dishes and dayparts, giving chefs another way to introduce a current flavour without having to reinvent an entire menu.
And ranch's international moment may only be beginning. Following the World Cup reaction, food-industry observers have pointed to growing global interest, with US brands already exploring ways to introduce the flavour to newly converted audiences outside North America.
